Picture Books to Teach the Six Traits 2. When introducing the 6 Traits to students, many teach-ers read aloud a text that exemplifies the trait(s). This is the notion of mentor text. Students learn the evidence of the trait from mentors and how to imitate it within their own writings. Such mentor text often includes picture books.
Even after children have outgrown picture books they still enjoy hearing a story read aloud. Hearing a good story read well, especially if it is just a little beyond a child’s own capabilities, is an excellent way to encourage independent reading. Not all books are best read aloud; some are better enjoyed silently.
During a read-aloud session use these books to teach inference. Focus on asking your students to read between the lines when information is implied by the text or illustrations. Wordless books are particularly useful books to teach inference.
