Yep, the pacing and the tie-ins were my two biggest complaints with Sword of Kaigen (which I still loved despite that). Blood over Bright Haven is a true standalone and in my opinion, the pacing is great - I was totally enthralled from early on and there is really no middle-of-the-book lag.
