Fossil cycads

The bennettitaleans (note informal name rather than the order-level Bennettitales) were originally mistaken for cycads because of their cycad-like growth form (Figure 10.9). However, the reproductive structures of these plants and syndetocheilic stomata place them soundly in the anthophyte clade. Bennettitaleans first appear in the Triassic and ...

When fossil cycads first began to be discovered in significant numbers decades ago, they attracted much interest. Researchers like Seward, Wieland, Williamson, and Chamberlain were foremost in the 30's and 40's. Wieland's "American Fossil Cycads," in two volumes, remains one of the landmark reference works in this area. In fossil records, only fragments of cycads were preserved (Harris, 1964; Mamay, 1976; Pant, 1987; Artabe & Stevenson, 1999). Triassic cycads, L. gracilis and L. yangcaogouensis have been found with a stem, cataphylls and a cone, providing an opportunity for the fossils to be compared with extant cycads.
