Dry Firing a Marlin Rimfire. Guy's to be honest with you I have not fired my Marlin 990 in years. My 990 is a 1979 year production which does not have the last round bolt hold open feature. I've been looking around on the net toward questions of dry firing a Marlin namely the model 60. The 60 seems to be more commonly sold the most.

Mine is 1967 vintage. I can only guess as to how many thousands of rounds I have fired through that rifle. The firing pin slides in a slot in the bolt.Short pin protrusion is easy to fix on a 39. If you look at the pin, you'll see a big shoulder at the front where it hits the front of the firing pin slot in the bolt. File a bit off this until the pin sticks out enough, but not enough that it dents the chamber edge. 8 posts · Joined 2007. #1 · Jul 12, 2019. Much of the time, my Marlin 990 works just fine. On occasion, it will no-fire due to a very light strike of the firing pin. I can see a mark and indentation, but it's not enough to fire. Sometimes it happens three times in a row. I cycle the action by hand, ejecting the old round and a new round goes in.

When I drop the firing pin into the bolt and try to put in the firing pin retaining pin, the retaining pin hits the top of the firing pin head preventing me from putting the retaining pin in. I don't know of any springs required for the bolt assembly. Just the bolt, firing pin and firing pin retaining pin. Any ideas what I'm missing here?
