I think I know why, looking at the API, it appears that gifs that were uploaded before the full migration from Gfycat to Redgifs were still hosted on Gfycat's backend and could be pulled using Gfycat's api, example. I got it using redgifs. You post a video (that gets turned into a gif) and the site gives u the link to copy. Then when u wanna post it, you click the "link" section (not the image one), paste the link and add a description on top. And thats it.
