The coastline here is more treacherous than Cancun’s, including rocky shoreline, sharp coral, and strong undertows on the east coast. To me, saying Cancun is touristy and Americanized is an understatement. Probably the most Americanized in Mexico. Playa is also Americanized but easier to get away and explore the nearby area. Cozumel, a great choice for any water related activities. You might consider splitting the time between Playa and Cozumel.
