I also sujest you to try Silent gear, the mod has a lot of cool fratures for gear and armor (rings and bracelets can give you even more buffs) and looks fun to learn. My only regreat for using meka gear in ATM 8 is to never need to touch silent gear.

Get silk touch so that you could pick mob spawners. I recommend getting brass pickaxe from silent gear. Botany pots. Rftools storage scanner. Then Refined Storage or Applied Energetics. I usually use RF to jump start to AE. Ars nouveau. It can light up areas with the cost of mana. Furnator is pretty good for early power source from Powah.Silent Gear picks made out of brass has the inherent trait of Silk Touch. 3 copper and 1 zinc, both of which are very easy to get. Make an ore hammer and use it on those and combine them in a crafting table gets you 4 brass, 1 more than needed to make a pick head.
