Mjreynolds928. Thanks. I changed the plugs and filters and put clean fuel with SeaFoam. I did the VRO bypass and mixed oil in with fuel. The boat ran better but somewhere between 2000-3000 rpm the motor shakes a little as if it’s struggling. Anywhere before and after that range it purrs like a kitten.28,762. Mar 22, 2007. #6. Re: Evinrude 48 spl (1989) ignition timing. Have you checked the flywheel to make sure the key has not sheared or partially sheared. The key locates the flywheel in the proper relationship to the crankshaft and hence timing cannot get drastically out of spec unless someone has messed with the advance linkage.Re: Setting the timing advance at full throttle You may indeed blow up the motor and it proves nothing.-----Timing on outboard motors generally does not go out of adjustment.-----Why do you feel you need to check / adjust it.-----My best advice !---Find a dealer with a test prop or big test tank to check this for you.

You are only concerned about the lower screw at idle. The upper screw is only the WOT stop for the carbs. Your idle should be about 1000-1200 rpm on muffs.Oct 19, 2012. #3.
