The only way to tell a 351M from a 400 is to pull the head and measure the stroke, or pull the oil pan and reference the crank number. They are a nightmare to balance when this is done because they require heavy metal added. However, you need a specific timing chain set that is made just for this swap. You CANNOT mix and match components to "make your own" set because the 351W crank sprocket has a different tooth count.
